You have writing prompts probably as a county or state mandated way to score students on their writing skills. Random people who are paid minimum wage read your paper (these people have no skill relating to English they could be your bum off the street) Yes you do get you grades.

P.S. do not become obsessed with your grade this is just a stupid writing thing. I did poorly this year and in my creative writing class in school my teacher says I am a future writer. But my love is poetry and songwriting which there will probably never be a state mandated test for.
