Writing Prompts Kids

Gary Said:

Why do people keep naming their kids Aiden, Isabella, and Mady?

We Answered:

Oh my God, you're going on my Contacts list, lol! I completely agree! I swear, if you threw a baseball in a random direction where I live, you'd either hit a kid named Emily or a kid named Brendan.

I too see absolutely /no/ reason why parents name their kids common, dull, overused names. Why would you want your child to be the same as everyone else? I know the name doesn't make the person, but it's pretty hard to grow up with a sense of identity when you share your name with six other people in your class.

I think most people are so terrified that their child will be made fun of if they have a remotely uncommon name, that they just choose to name them something that everyone else has. News flash parents: kids will be made fun of for one reason or another! It's a fact of life! And their first name usually has nothing to do with it- my surname is what got me in trouble in elementary school, but guess what- I moved on. It's something everyone has to go through in their lifetime, and honestly, I think it helps them develop a thicker skin- life's not easy and they might as well learn that early so they can make their peace with it.

Also, I'm getting the impression that parents think it's either one or the other: you name your child Emma or your name her Chrystall-Haze Lucrecia Pop Tart. There /is/ an in-between. To name a few, my top three girl names are Delilah, Carys and Felicity. They're pretty (at least to me) and uncommon, but not something every child in their school would be named.

Another point I've heard been made is: Well, if I've loved the name Madison since I was five, why can't I name my child that? The answer is, you can. There's no law against popular names (although, in my opinion, there really should be a limit to the amount of Lilies or Mikes in the world) and, if you're okay with your child blending into the crowd and being called Aiden J. or Olivia G. for the rest of their life, go ahead. But I honestly think it's pretty selfish to call your child something with no regard for how it will affect their life.

Lovely question, I'm so glad someone agrees with me!
? Q????
