Is this a readable paragraph for an essay? What do I need to fix?

We Answered:

Generally speaking I have to say that there is a lot of room for improvment. The style is very weak. Try improving your language by replacing the "were" "do" and so one with other verbs.

Furthermore they is no clear structure in this paragraph! What is the overall topic of your essay? Are trying to write a persuasive or descriptive essay? What is the main idea that you are trying to express in this paragrph. You should think about that and ad structure.

If you add more details I will be glad to help you more.

Cheers!

How many daughters does Paulina have in the Winter's Tale?

We Answered:

I'm not familiar with the play (apart from the direction 'exit. pursued by a bear') so I've looked at the cast of characters in the Winter's Tale in my Complete Works of Shakespeare, The only daughter mentioned is Perdita, daughter of Leontes, there's no mention of Paulina's children. I suggest you read through your character's part and see if she speaks of any.

Questions on application essays/personal statements?

We Answered:

The essays are generally the same or run along the same lines (the UCs just changed their prompts for the first time in... I think it was 25 years, if that's any indication) year after year. And if you're looking for Fall 2009, you will be way too early for the colleges to post deadlines and such (kudos to you for being on top of the game though); those will start coming out probably in September, perhaps a little earlier.
The UC prompts are the essays, yes. There is also another little box that you can write an extra 500 words about yourself to explain anything else you'd like (should you so choose). Each prompt must be answered, and be sure to spend your time actually thinking and planning on what you'll be writing about. The Personal Statement is supposed to complete the application, to supplement the already presented information. It gives the admissions officers to get to know you as a student (dreams, goals, experiences, etc) rather than just some random numbers. With that in mind, don't just repeat what you've already presented in the application, but add to it. Give yourself some dimension.

It sounds like you're already off to a great start. Good luck with everything this next year, and don't stress. It's a lot easier than you think.

HELP with speed while doing homework?????!!!!!!?

We Answered:

I don't know if this will work for you, but it got me through a lot of essays in high school. First write down all the important points you want to write about on a piece of paper, and keep it in front of you. This helps keep you focused and your thoughts on the right track. Then just start writing,i found the computer better for this, so you can change words and restructure the paragraphs or sentences without having to rewrite the whole thing. And if you really get stuck, take a 10 minute break so your brain has some downtime. Also, always re-read the whole thing, if something doesn't sound right to you, change it because it won't sound right to whoever is reading it either. And the online thesaurus is invaluable. Hope this helps
