A writing prompt is pretty much what you have to write a paper on. like lets say i'm given a prompt and it says: "If you were an alien and you landed on earth, what would you do?" Then I would write a paper on being an alien that landed on earth and the things I would do.

If you are asked to apply those to a short story i think that it's asking you to come up with a topic to write about relating to the short story you have read.
