Science Writing Prompts

Dean Said:

What does "write a brief essay on a topic that will display your interest in science and math mean?"?

We Answered:

It means that you write an essay on a topic that you can show-off your interest in science or math.

You pick what you write on... I'm not sure where you're confused.

Wade Said:

what is writing about literature, the arts, and other humanities?

We Answered:

This sounds like a question for your teacher. (is the poor thing psycho?)

The one I can try to answer is about writing about literature. This would include literary criticism, which in short is a way of discussing the deeper meanings of a work of literature by taking some philosophical approach and using that as a point of view to interpret the work. For example I kind of devised/pioneered two 'new' forms of criticism as an undergrad (I am sure they have been applied before but I haven't heard of it).

One is what I call Christian criticism. This would entail taking a book, such as 'Jane Eyre', and reading it from a religious perspective. What do the characters' actions mean? Why do they do what they do? --and so forth. One question about this book would be about why Rochester loses his LEFT hand and LEFT eye in the fire-- because has a symbolic importance in the Epistles of St Paul. You would not have made made him lose his right hand, for example. It wouldn't have worked-- so the author must have known that. Now write that essay explaining that.

The other form is what I call astrological criticism, in which personality types are evaluated according to what their sign is. In 'Jane Eyre' you would attribute Cancer to Rochester and Taurus to Jane; now read the book with that in mind and see how their personality types come into play with each other and so on. You would not, knowing, call Jane an Aries and Rochester a Pisces, for example. Those personality types would not have got along and the author must have known that, whatever she might have called them. Now write that essay explaining that.

Writing FOR math and the sciences would have to be either work on textbooks or on philosophical theses, such as Fibonacci's golden mean.

Writing essay examinations would be writing whatever the dorky prof wants for you to get a good grade, regardless of deeper thought... so in those terms a test essay isn't truly a great work of literary commentary.

Then again, I may be just wrong.

Jacqueline Said:

How are roller coasters related to science?

We Answered:

Just one sentence? Well, when riding a roller coaster potential energy is converted into kinetic energy.

Stephen Said:

How do roller coasters tie into science?

We Answered:

Because roller coasters all use physics, physics is science. You need to know all kinds of physics to build rollercoasters, such as, if you wanted to build a loop you would need to calculate stuff like the weight of the cars, and estimate the average weight with all the riders, then you need to figure out the speed of the cars coming down the hill and their average velocity to calculate how big of a hill you would need to be able to make it around a certain size loop.

writing prompts?

You are sitting at a desk with a pencil in your hand, doing homework. A grandaddy long legs spider crawls up the pencil to the red eraser tip and yells "Stop! You're killing my people!"

Three horses are tied to a wagon and a small light red horse walks over, jealous that they get to work with the farmer, but the black adult kicks him softly and ignores him while a ginger colored horse says, "Get away before they ever put a bridle on you. Do not submit to the slavery they have put us under."

Two oranges are growing on a tree and one falls with a plop to the earth. The other orange has to decide whether to join him or wait for the pickers who are walking along the rows. This one could be a story with two alternate endings, based on his dropping or waiting to be chosen.
