Sample Writing Prompts

Gordon Said:

Any ideas for a sample prompt on the ACT?

We Answered:

Here's one from this link: http://www.actstudent.org/writing/sample… If you click the link, it gives examples of essays that scored high and low.

Educators debate extending high school to five years because of increasing demands on students from employers and colleges to participate in extracurricular activities and community service in addition to having high grades. Some educators support extending high school to five years because they think students need more time to achieve all that is expected of them. Other educators do not support extending high school to five years because they think students would lose interest in school and attendance would drop in the fifth year. In your opinion, should high school be extended to five years?

In your essay, take a position on this question. You may write about either one of the two points of view given, or you may present a different point of view on this question. Use specific reasons and examples to support your position.

Some cities have ordinances that limit the number of pets a city resident can own. Often, the maximum number of pets allowed is limited to three or four. Some people support the limit because they feel it protects them against having a neighborhood overrun with animals that could potentially become a public nuisance. Other people oppose the limit because they feel it infringes upon their rights as private citizens. In your opinion, should city governments be allowed to limit the number of pets a resident can own?

Start it or end it by saying you have 32 perfect teeth that will attest to your dedication to the subject.

A bit of humor is a good thing no matter what you are writing.

Are jobs that ask for writing tests scams?

We Answered:

If it's a legitimate company, then you shouldn't be worried. If you only applied over the internet and you've never heard of the place and can't drive by to see that's it's a legitimate business... you might have reason to worry. I've had a writing test before and a test where I received a list of 50 commonly misspelled words and I had to correct the ones that I thought were wrong... that was tough for some of them. If you want the job, complete the test. There are many people applying for one job, so businesses are able to pick the best and the brightest for most positions. Good luck!
