How to write from a male perspective?

We Answered:

I honestly think some of the best stories are written trans-gender. By this I mean a female writing in a male perspective, or vice versa. However, one of the best ways to research this style (male perspective) is to read books written in a male perspective by a male author. Read books in a lot of different genres so you can get a feel for the male character. Also, KNOW YOUR CHARACTER. Even if your narrator was female, and you didn't know your character back to front, it wouldn't flow well.

Looking for helpful advice on how to stop writing procrastination, please!!! : )?

We Answered:

Try this on for size: you don't really want to write, at least not now. People don't have to trick themselves into pursuing their "deepest and strongest passions"; if anything, they have to trick themselves into stopping so that they can take care of other responsibilities.

Of course, every writer has days and even weeks when a particular project becomes too daunting and even cleaning the grout along the bathtub seems preferable. And most writers experience considerable self-doubt. But they always come back to the page, because that's how they think, how they process experience, how they live.

Yes, there is a veritable cottage industry dedicated to removing "writer's block," but all that industry attests to is how much people need the fantasy that, were it not for some impediment beyond their control, they would be writers. It's the idea of writing, not actual writing, that they're in love with. In addition, said cottage industries allow them to believe that, because they're blocked, they are more complex or sensitive or insightful than the unblocked. Or have higher standards. Anything to keep those anxious dollars rolling in.

I know that 21 feels old because you have nothing to compare but what came before. But, having taught college for many years, I know that most 21-year-olds are just beginning to discover who they are and what they can do. Why not consider a hiatus from the pressure you're putting on yourself to find that special chair or occult mantra or magic pen or secret workshop that will make you a writer? Why not play with other possibilities? Maybe you have greater gifts as a film director. Maybe you're capable of becoming the world's greatest archaeologist, one who WILL write, once you have mastered all of that rich source material. How will you know, if you don't take the pressure off and look around a bit?

And maybe you will write outstanding fantasy fiction . . . later on. Once you've lived more and read more. There's no better stimulus to writing than having something you really want to say.

Sorry, I know this wasn't the answer you wanted. And such suggestions are better made in person, by someone who knows you, and can speak to your true potential. But somebody needs to raise this possibility with you, so Yahoo! Answers it is. Best of luck with whatever you end up doing.
