We Answered:

I taught creative writing classes at a community college for ten years. My style of teaching may have been different from your instructor's method. I would not have subjected aspiring writers to critiques from other students. Giving a good critique is beyond the skill level of most writing students. I would hate for a student to become discouraged because another student made comments that were not based on solid knowledge of the art of writing.

You might do better to become involved in an online group like ticket2write that is made up of professional writers, teachers, editors and agents. There is no charge for submitting your work for a critique, so you are not out anything if you are not getting the kind of feedback you need. The members tend to give more honest critiques than you will receive in a class, because they are serious writers.

Ticket2write has been on Yahoo for ten years and has been listed in the Writer's Digest list of 100 top websites for writers. Check it out at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ticket2wri…

We Answered:

Yvonne, I've taken in-person writing classes and have a connection with someone who teaches online writing one on one, so I know both approaches.

Each can help you be a better writer, but each can also be a waste of money and effort.

And, speaking frankly, I doubt I'll ever take another, of either kind, because I can get what they offer free at http://absolutewrite.com/forums/index.ph… from people who know what they're talking about.
