Darrell Said:

Will I have time for both of these jobs?

We Answered:

The pastry chef thing will pay good money, but as you say it will take some schooling to even get a entry-level position in a bakery or restaurant dessert area.

Songwriting - potentially lucrative - but no one pays you a paycheck when you are first starting out. Songwriting (unless you are in a band) is an individual career. Hard to break through into that business.

Classes to take in college to become a proofreader or editor?

We Answered:

There is not really a class to take to get a job as a proofreader or editor. I am pretty sure that like me you are naturally gifted in English and are good at proofreading, writing, and editing.

I have been an editor of my college newspaper and editor of a newsletter for my church. Neither one of those jobs were paid but I got the experience and now I could easily apply for a job as an Editor and Writer.

I ended up graduating with a major in Sociology which has nothing to do with editing but because of my non-paid work experience, I could easily apply for a job as an editor or proofreader.

I do suggest that you do go to college and a degree in college English, Communications, or Journalism would be a good major to have a career as an Editor or proofreader.

What's a good writing outlet that will help me fuel my passions?

We Answered:

Sounds like you would enjoy writing fanfiction.

I'm a bit bemused by why not liking fantasy settings is an issue here. You'd write fanfic for a setting you _do_ like. I write in two fandoms, neither or them fantasy. There are fanfic communities out there for everything from NCIS to Sherlock Holmes.

Go to www.fanfiction.net, find a TV show or book you enjoy, look and see if there's fanfic for it. If there is, there's probably also a forum or two (or fifty) in the same section. The people there will either run writing games and contests themselves or will be able to tell you where to find some. Or you might just find that the parameter of "fanfiction for x" is all you need...in which case write away, post it, see what response you get, and at the same time start reading and reviewing other people's stories.
