Does this sound like a good start to a story??

We Answered:

At first I thought it was good, but the more I read through it the more I noticed that some of the dialogue and descriptions sounded a little phony. In the snippet about self defense, I was getting into the story, but I was also starting to smell a rat. It is quite reminiscent from Twilight when Bella is getting attacked in Port Angeles. Then you completely dampened my interest when you used "Stupefy" from the Harry Potter series!!!

To tell the truth, you have a good style, but use your own ideas and practice dialogue so that it flows naturally.

You are on the right track. Freakonomics is not a novel, so the first two prompts don't really work. You have a good start... just go with it.

The economies of the new countries created from land that had been in the Austrian empire were weak.

For example Poland grew lots of grain, but the mills for grinding it were in Austria. The same applied to natural fibres grown in Hungary - all the textile mills for weaving them into cloth were in Czechoslovakia. This hadn't mattered before, as the economy of the Austrian empire was integrated.

However, after the treaty of Versailles these raw materials, and then the finished products, had to be transported across borders into different countries, undergo customs checks, were subject to tariffs and taxes, differing laws depending on what country they were in in transit in at any given time, and their value calculated in different currencies.

All this considerably reduced their net worth, and therefore their value to the economy of the countries concerned.
