public health sociocutural issue?

If I were you I'd ignore Rej C - he's obviously got some weird sort of axe to grind, the toxoplasmosis idea is inherently flawed (on too many levels) and would make you sound like an uneducated looney.

The obesity idea you have is very good though, but what you could do is look at the way obesity was once a burden of disease for the rich (and in fact a sign of wealth) and it has now become a burden of disease for poor people. You could look at this pattern within industrialised/western countries (the poorer you are, the less educated you are etc, the less you have access to healthy eating options), and you could also look at the burden of obesity on a global scale: a lot of middle class people in developing countries are becoming more obese, as they are becoming richer. Whilst your idea about splitting your study group into men and women is innovative - i think you might struggle on finding the literature on that one, as I have never heard of the distribution of obesity being more skewed to men (in fact it is actually the other way round).
If you are keen to look at ethnic groups, you could look at how migrants from other countries and their 2nd generation children are becoming increasingly obese once they migrate to westernised countries (largely to do with the sedentary lifestyle, poverty, etc).
There is also an obesity epidemic developing amongst children in westernised countries - this is a fairly new and dangerous epidemic, and a lot of research is being channeled into this - so a literature search will be fairly easy.
If you are looking for a group to study I would stick to socioeconomic - it is easier to study and can be applied on a global and national scale: poverty (and it's ugly sisters: lack of education and ill health) are every where.

Other ideas I did a lot af research on whilst doing a public health masters are:
Access to medicines (in particular antiretrovirals, and what big pharma and the WTO TRIPS agreement mean for the world's poorest people)

will we ever reach the millenium development goals? (End Poverty and Hunger, Universal Education, Gender Equality, Child Health, Maternal Health, Combat HIV/AIDS, Environmental Sustainability, Global Partnership) You wil find no shortage of info on any of these goals - but only look at one goal - doing all 8 would be a thesis (hmmm - a bit like this answer - well hope it was useful)
