How can I inspire my 8 yr old daughter to enjoy writing? She has to write twice a week for school?

We Answered:

I had this problem with my daughter too. She is now 8 and in 2nd grade. In 1st grade, she did not want to write. She is a total perfectionist and can't handle words being misspelled and not knowing the topic inside and out. Now I sit down and do a pre-writing with her. If the topic was butterflies for example, we would first write all the words we new we might need on a piece of paper. I would help her sound them out but in the end gave her the correct spelling since she is more comfortable this way.
Then we start doing an outline of main points(but not full sentences.) Then she is supposed to be able to take the word wall we made and the outline and write her paper. I walked her through the first few and slowly made her come up with sentences on her own. It is a lot of extra work on your part, it is much easier to say "Go do your journal." It is well worth it to give them the organization and confidence to do it on there own. In January she had her state writing assessment. I found out she wrote 3 pages and scored high. I was so pleased and now find her enjoying writing. We still have topics that are hard for her and I help her with the outline and word wall on those days. Talk to her teacher first about how much you can help her though. Good Luck.
