Well, the most popular I've heard of to surface has been the yearly competition called NaNoWriMo.
National Writing Month, gets thousands of contestants each year, and continues to increase in number.
The basic competition is basically to write a total of 50, 000 words, and the winner is judged by quantity.
The next contest starts sometime in October this year.

Storymash.com is running a legit contest which ends April 20. Even if you don't win, this site is a ton of fun, and will earn you a few bucks every month, probably for the life of the site if people continue to read your chapter.
