Remember Miss Havisham in Charles Dickens book 'Great Expectations'? She was truly eccentric in that she had been jilted on her wedding day and tricked out of part of her money and, although quite elderly, still wore her wedding dress every day and had the wedding cake on display on a table in the great hall. She never opened the curtains either.

Now I'm not suggesting that you copy that but you could have a character who had suffered some great misfortune that had affected her behaviour in a similar way. Perhaps her husband was a sea captain, so she was wealthy, and had gone away to sea and his ship had entered the Bermuda Triangle, never to be seen again. She, however, refused to accept his disappearance and acted as if he were with her at home, laying a place at the table for his meals, and washing his clothes, even though they had not been worn. Imagine a visit to her as a relative, and how disconcerting it would be to have tea with her, when she lays three places. During the meal she could talk to her husband as if he were there, and encourage you to hold a conversation with him also. As you left she would ask you to kiss him goodbye! Weird or what?

Mayb the shampoo is a bad luck token and her world goes wrong and her parents don't know her like she is on another world but not her own if u get what i mean. and however she tries to gets rid of it, it always comes back etc. Tehn eventually she gets rid of it by throwing it in the sea or something and when she gets home everything is god again. hope this helped. x
