Applying for Phillips Exeter Academy? We Answered:
I am also applying as a freshman and am in a similar situation. I've been searching a lot for tips and advice but to be truthful, there isn't much.Basically, some important aspects they look at are: (ranked from most important to least although they are all vital in the application process) In my opinion from my "research".
1) Your interview-Yes, your interview is extremely important, what they want is character, someone they can see with confidence, kindness, and a very interesting character. That is how they know more about you. they want to learn about your passion, things that they can NOT see from grades etc. alone
2) Extracurriculars, these are very important as they want somebody actively involved in the community. Not some nerdy kid who can't do anything except study for tests. They want someone who can contribute to their school.
3) Grades- they are of course important. As long as you're around A-B you're fine.of course it would be great you're all As. But I think Bs are okay, as long as you show potential.
4) Recommendations- these of course help them to know more about your character at school etc. from adults who know you.
5) Essay- your essays are very important. To be truthful, your grades, recommendations, SSAT and ISEE scores and essays are at about the same level. You need to show them about yourself, reflect the stronger, interesting personality within yourself in your essays.
6) SSAT and ISEE. most students score above the 90 percentile. But there is no guarantee that you will or will not be accepted.
It all depends on which topics you think will reflect your personality and strengths best. The topics are really broad. 5. write on any topic of importance to you. basically, you can write about anything you want. in my opinion. from the listed prompts, the best are 2 and 4. these will definitely reflect yourself most.
Really, they look at the person as a whole. If you have any further questions feel free to message me via yahoo answers. just click on my profile and you will see a message me tab.
All the best of luck to you!!! Hopefully we'll both be accepted, then we can meet next year!
And btw. I really would suggest relaxing a bit. Every applicant feels just as nervous, worried, and afraid. I panic so much now, always worrying that they will reject me. But really, it's just a school. They want you to be calm. Somebody able to handle situations confidently. Handle this one well. Relax, think of this as another school essay. Do a lot of editing.
