Earth Day Writing Prompts

Brandy Said:

What do you think of my college application essay?

We Answered:

This is extremely well written. Excellent work. However, my major concern is that I think you're misinterpreting the question. You're taking a philosophical approach to the question and that's acceptable. However, it only allows you to give a generic, abstract answer. The same generic answer that most people will give.

You should aim for something more practical, something that shows you're aware of the world and don't live in a bubble. By choosing something practical it demonstrates that you're interested in learning and motivated to better yourself.

Look for current events, advances in science or moments and history that aren't given their due notice. If you've decided on a major, find something in that area you can write about. That way you can talk about the topic and talk about yourself at the same time. If not, pick something that interests you and work off of that.

The people at the university will spend hours reading admissions essays. You can make yours stand out by showing them you can think. Have fun with it. Be entertaining, be engaging and show a little personality.

Jim Said:

A revised story of love and fidelity. Care to comment?

We Answered:

A story out of cedar, can't say I've read one like that before. Snow falling on cedar stumps was rather profound, probably make a great closing in the movie, you know tears and such with the lilting tune of lost cedars playing in the background: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FB1Wx7nXL…

What can I say, your words moved me to ban all erasers from this point forward.

P.S. Can I keep my Delete key though?

Nelson Said:

Americans: Are you proud to be citizens of the greatest and freest nation on Earth?

We Answered:

You bet I am.

Jackie Said:

Anyone remember Erich von Daniken? Christians seem to...?

We Answered:

You're dating yourself, Lupis! but yes, I remember "Chariots of the Gods?" Most of my schoolmates read it (I was one of the few who didn't); and the most fervent adherents, as I recall, were also the most dyed-in-the-wool Christians. At the time, I thought this was a contradiction in terms; now I realize that the bible and "Chariots?" are simply different expressions of the same nonsense.

I think the question mark in the title was von Daniken's way of shielding himself from lawsuits.

Veronica Said:

can somebody please proofread this short essay for me and tell me what you think about it? thanks!?

We Answered:

Your essay is well-written. The only down-fall I see with it is that you don't give enough detail about how he has influenced you in a significant way. It seems like all he has inspired you to do is maybe not be afraid of the ocean, but even that's not set in stone. If I were you, I would add another paragraph explaining exactly how he has influenced you.
