The independent variable is the one you are manipulating in your study (what are we changing to see if it has an effect?). So in this case, the student activity (writing about emotional experiences, drawing about emotional experiences) would be the independent variable.

The dependent variable is the one being affected by the experiment (what is being affected?). In your example, anxiety would be it.

Extraneous variables are things you don't want to mess up your study, but might. One example- was this study done during midterm exams or another stressful school period? (If so, that would affect stress/anxiety a lot).
