Daily Writing Ideas

David Said:

Writing a story about Israel and its conflicts/terrorism, help/ideas needed?

We Answered:

When the girl arrives she finds out, contrary to her expectations, that most of the terrorist acts are actually committed by Israeli settlers and the Israeli army against the indiginous Arab population (Muslim and Christian alike).

Though before she went to Israel she kept hearing about Arab terrorism against Israel, when she arrived she found an apartheid state that oppresses Arab people more than how South Africa appressed African blacks in the 20th century.

She finds out that Israel has built a wall around Paletinian cities and villages that is much worse than the berlin wall, which essentially made the whole Palestinian population captive within a large prison(see http://chromovision.com/films/Wall.wmv ).

Even though she kept hearing about Palestinians attacking Israelis before her visit, she found out that Israelis have killed thousands of Palestinians (mostly civilians) including more than 1000 Palestinian children - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Israel_pale…

She found out that Israel was built over the ruins of nearly 500 Palestinian villages whose population was forced leave to establish the state of Israel in 1948. She found out that nearly 60% of the Palestinian people live in Diaspora because Israel does not allow them to return to their homeland, while any Jew from anywhere in the world can immigrate and settle in the occupied Palestinian land.

Yes she finds out a story that is very different from what the Western media had made her to believe. She found out that she should not take the media at face value, but she should do her own research to find the truth.

Daily writing exercises?

We Answered:

here's some websites:

http://www.cmmayo.com/d5mwe.html

http://www.wakeupwriting.com/

http://www.6ftferrets.com/exercise-conte…

http://fictionwriting.about.com/od/writi…

http://www.oneofus.co.uk/index.php/writi…

Those should keep you busy for a while and are interesting to glance through.
I also have a notebook that has a list of things to write about for exercises such as:
memories (I abuse this one)
reflections or self-observations
reading response (you can do this to anything, even a newspaper or magazine)
experiments with long or short sentences
ideas for stories
dreams
family stories
descriptions
overheard conversations (I love this one)
response to quotes
practice with sensory
reflections on past writing (being reflective in your work is really helpful)
profiles
imagined dialogue

I also had a paper somewhere that had a list of random phrases or words that I collected and could pick any of them to write about at any time. You can start one of those just by jotting down phrases you read that you really like or words you learn that are pretty or whatever and use them as really short prompts later or try to string them together.

Steve Said:

My interests change almost daily, is that good to draw on for writing non-fiction?

We Answered:

Of course it is...some of the best reading I've ever had was non-fiction....one was a work on carnivorous plants (there are over 400 different meat eating plants on earth you know). Another was a study on Bumblebees and the fact they are one of the few insects that can be trained and will form a bond with a human being. Some of the studies on ant colonies are beginning to find out amazing facts...the largest colony, in Japan, that is over 100 kilometers long appears to have a form of intelligence almost on a par with humans.

And if botany and entomology don't grab you, there are hundreds of other fields to study, write and ponder on.

Jerome Said:

My brother is going away to the military. I'm writing him a poem for xmas and need ideas of what to put it on?

We Answered:

You could right in on a small canteen, or a wallet. However, if I were you, I would put it on a sturdy but also thin paper (cardstock, maybe?) because in the military, soldiers tape pictures and little momentos from home on the inside of their helmets. You could tell him about that. Include a family photo, and it'll be a very sweet Christmas gift. :)

Shannon Said:

Do you think I ought to get back into writing?

We Answered:
