High school course selection help?

We Answered:

It's really important that you take classes that you enjoy, so that when you discuss how you've used your opportunities in high school in your college applications/interviews, admissions officers can see that you've been honing in on your passions.

Given that, I would recommend that you take:

Journalism - The ability to produce solid writing for wide audiences is a skill that most admissions officers look for.

Logic - This will help you think, reason, and write well so it should be a good foundation for many of the class that you'll take at the university.

Entrepreneurship - This one is great because it demonstrates that you are preparing to be a leader, and that you are likely creative, independent, and motivated.

Web page design - This one is valuable, because it will give you skills that you can use to better disseminate the ideas that you'll come up with in your studies.

Stock market trading - This is just generally give you skills that will help you be prosperous financial after college.

That's 3 credits, why don't you select something that you enjoy to fill the last 1/2 credit space...

Stay focused & follow your passions. I wish you the best of luck with your education endeavors! :)

Are 6 AP Classes TOO MUCH for Junior Year?

We Answered:

I personally think it will be too much. They say you should plan for 2 hours of homework a night PER each AP class (studying and homework) and in junior year you have SAT/ACT tests. Not to mention that AP classes start effecting your college GPA. Remember, it looks good that you take AP classes -- as long as you get A's or B's. With 6 AP classes you're going to burn out quickly and ruin your GPA.

But, if you think you can handle it and are EXTREMELY well motivated and have a good work ethic it is possible you could do it.

Question, you say, "The reason why I am taking so many AP classes is because I am trying to boost my GPA. The reason for my low GPA is because I consistently got Bs in AP classes and some As in Honors classes." How many AP classes were you taking a year before this? And you got B's? If you were taking 2 AP classes a year and scored B's then adding onto the list of AP classes will just lessen the grade you will be able to achieve across all of your classes, no?

Any ideas how to promote a book I've written online?

We Answered:

A lot of authors have blogs, and you can use those to promote your book and talk about other things that interest you. Some examples:

http://journal.neilgaiman.com/
http://tammy212.livejournal.com/

You can also comment on other people's blogs with links back to your homepage (or your book's homepage). Just be careful that you only comment when you have something relevant to say, or you will annoy people very quickly.

You could also get an author's account at LibraryThing: http://www.librarything.com/librarything…

Some people use sites like Squidoo and HubPages to promote their books, although the ones I've seen tend to be non-fiction or ebooks rather than traditionally published fiction. I'm sure you could find advice there, though. (A quick search turned up this, for example: http://www.squidoo.com/book_promotion)
