Classes Creative Writing

Dan Said:

Are creative writing classes good or bad?

We Answered:

I'm afraid so. Then again, if you can learn all this now, and then take a step back and spend some time away from classes, you might learn to incorporate what's been taught to what comes naturally.

I did a reading group, just for fun, but now I can't read books the same way. I always look at the components that make the story rather than just enjoying it.

Still, if you want to expand your thinking classes will help you. I always wondered how some writers made it through college with their own unique writing style, but they do it. Maybe it's a question of finding the real you and the ability to put that on paper. Good luck :)

Aaron Said:

I'm thinking of starting a Creative Writing class in the New Year. What do they do in these classes?

We Answered:

Be very careful. I've done two of these and they have been worse than useless. Either one member of the group monopolises the whole session, week after week, or the tutor just makes you write guff every week and never gives you any feedback. You might be better advised to enter your work for competitions, or to pay for critiques for what you consider your best stories. Get hold of the Writers' and Artists yearbook, or look at it in your local public library. heaps of good advice there.
