Am I Scared to Move to California? We Answered:
California is one of the most expensive states to live in, and also has the second highest unemployment rate in the country. You have two good things going for you. You have a place to stay, and a guaranteed job offer. Consider those pluses. The one problem you may have is your college education. If you are not a California resident you will find that the out of state tuition will almost double what you will pay over a California resident (or illegal alien). That's a minus.
If you really want to live here you have two things going for you that many others don't have. This would be the time to come. Most local contributors agree that for most new comers to get established in California they will need roughly $7,500 to $10,000 cash

Is National University in San Diego a school that will look decent on my resume? We Answered:
Youre FINE!! Your DEGREE and EXPERIENCE is what counts. National University is a well accredited school. I took classes there and UCSD just to get caught up. Let me tell you, status wise is way better than University of Phoenix. If youre going to Nat'l Univ. you will meet great people which will help you network. Keep in mind most of the students already have careers, or they want to earn their masters or they want another degree. There are some students who are freshmans. Either way i highly recommend it! People there are great and so are the professors. The professors are more relaxed because a lot of them are around their age so they usually talk to their students as if theyre their peers. It is extremely EXPENSIVE. about $500- $800 a class. So look into any type of aid or loans. I wish you luck on your decision!Roy Said:
Can someone give me some advice for job-hunting in San Diego? We Answered:
You can always try online resources such as http://www.monster.com/, http://www.jobing.com/, http://www.sandiego.craigslist.org/, http://www.snagajob.com/, etc.Somewhere that I know of that is hiring ASAP is Heritage Security. My husband just got a job there and they hire both men and women. The process is pretty simple; they hire anyone who is educated and not a complete idiot, but placement is based on your performance.. the difference between a $10/hr job and a $20/hour job. http://www.heritagesecurity.com/
Places such as Food 4 Less and other grocery stores around the county carry Job Giant magazines. They have tons of listings just for jobs and other types of career placement. You can also check out the classified ads in the San Diego Union-Tribune. I get the paper every Sunday and I love clipping the coupons and looking through the ads.
Another thing that you can do is check with staffing agencies and temp agencies. Even if it's a temporary job, you can at least get your foot in the door.
Also check with colleges that have a strong science department, such as UCSD and see if there is anything that you would be able to do within the college.
Another thing you can do is considering going back to school. Fields that have minimal schooling that are always hiring lately include court reporting, paralegal, and nursing. You can apply for financial aid and get most of your schooling paid for by financial aid.
There are other fields as well, such as air traffic controlling, that don't require you to get schooling, but do require you to step into a new field and get paid training. If you're interested in that, check out the FAA's website and look for job possibilities. Air traffic controllers can make up to $150,000 per year and have a great retirement plan. http://www.faa.gov/
Also check http://www.usajobs.com/ for governemnt jobs that may be able to utilize your skillset.
Unfortunately, with this economy, people are having to settle for less than they are worth and less than they are able to do. When I was 16, I worked at Albertson's and my favorite cashier was there because he got laid off from his $85,000/year job. Last I heard, he was back at a similar position to his high paying job, making even more than before :) Even if you have to settle for less, this will only be temporary.
You can and will find something!
Good luck!

What jobs would be beneficial to my future as a novelist, essayist...?We Answered:
Jobs that will be beneficial to your future as a novelist/essayist would be particularly those jobs that:1) give you contact with other writers (ie working for a publisher, working in a bookstore, working in a library)
2) includes writing (ie working as a marketing assistant, working for a non-profit and taking charge of newsletters, intern at an ad agency)
3) provide you the freedom to continue your studies, especially writing classes at community colleges etc, at night (ie working as a receptionist, sales clerk, or other job that doesn't require a lot of overtime)
OR - 4) teaches you new skills and helps you expand your horizons (ie in a field such as solar energy, lasers, or any other other field that interests you)
