Do you need to be bi-lingual in french/english in order to get a job in Montreal, Quebec?

We Answered:

You will have far fewer opportunites for employment in Montreal is you are unilingual English. It won't be impossible to find a job, but your options will be fewer. It will also depend on the skills and training you have and your field of work.

I need lotsssss of info about Montreal! please montreal lovers, people living in montreal!?

We Answered:

Montreal is really a student-friendly city; apartments in Montreal are relatively cheap and there is a good nightlife and a lot of fun things to do, nice museums...

Montreal is a bilingual city usually signs and posters are predominantly in french, however there is frequently the english translation. If you stay in Montreal, not speaking french isn't a problem, it's totally possible to live in english only, but if you go out of town the situation is different and not being fluent in french is a bit of an handicap.

You can definitely take french class at McGill, if you want to go to med school I would however not recommend you minoring in french.

People usually doesn't mind speaking in english or in french, in a restaurant or a store you will be approached in french but the conversation switch to english easily.

Lots of nightclubs.

Public transportation system is ok, having your own car is always fun but not a necessity. During winter it's always a pain to make sure that your car is on the correct side of the street so it will not be towed to leave the street free for the plow truck.

Text is probably as popular in montreal then in cheyenne.

There is always loopholes but the bottom line is that with a student visa, you are not supposed to work outside campus. So working in a restaurant or retail store is not an option, but you could work in a store on campus. You could also ask for a off-campus work permit, with that permit you will be allowed to work up to 20 hours/week off-campus, but to get the permit you have to be enrolled in a canadian institution for at least 6 month prior to your application for the work permit and to maintain a good GPA. Not speaking french could be a problem depending on the job your looking for but there is plenty of job for english-only speakers.

You will need a student visa, no need to become a resident. Overall, montreal is a nice place to study and you don't need to be afraid by the french aspect of the city, however working with a student visa could be a challenge.

Lewis Said:

Can I work at the US embassy in Montreal?

We Answered:

The USA consulate in Montreal Web page is
http://montreal.usconsulate.gov/content/…
Their Address is 1155, rue Saint-Alexandre, just north of boulevard René-Lévesque
and their phone numbers are
Tel: 514.398.9695
Fax: 514.398.0973

Currently they are not hiring...and unfortunately for you they usually require at least a College degree to work in the Consulate and sometimes experience in the Area your wanting to work in.It wouldn't Hurt though calling the Consulate and asking if they have any sort of Internships for Young people like you.

Best of luck!
