Lucy Said:

How do people who dorm at college afford the cost of food, phone, clothes, and shopping?

We Answered:

Its difficult. I had no help whatsoever from my parents and in fact I was still expected to send money home to help out. But I looked really hard for financial aid and scholarships and then worked two jobs- I worked as a receptionist during the week in between classes on campus and then I cleaned houses on the weekend. During the summer I worked full time and saved my money. It depends on where you live and the cost of living- LA will def. be more expensive than other cities

I ate a lot of cereal and soup for my main meals. I did not have an expensive phone with a lot of features- something basic and like five years old at the time. I rarely shopped for clothes until the end of the season at places like Target or the Gap for severely marked down items. And whenever I wanted to do something fun it would usually be free- most colleges set up free events with food and music or even free movie tickets at the beginning of the semester or around finals. I crashed more than a few banquets with ziplock baggies to bring me some food home- eventually the catering staff recognized me and since I was cool with them they would give me whatever was left over without trying to sneak it out.

But these are all extreme examples. My roommates were horrified at what lengths I went to just to afford college but if you know it is worth it then you will sacrifice comfort. Eventually I made enough contacts on campus to get the help I needed and I know that when Im done I will never regret going after a big dream. Its hard but if you really want to become a writer and think LA is the way to do this then you will find a way.

Clinton Said:

When I go on job interviews what should I tell prospective employers about my work availability? LA actor?

We Answered:

Do you know how many waiters in LA ARE actors--or say they are? Most likely a minimum of 20% so there's nothing unusual about that.
Of course employers don't want to hear that:
A--you have limited availability
and
B--you're not really into working for them--just paying some bills until your REAL job opens up.
In LA they also have to wonder how you will conduct yourself when someone in the business comes in--going to serve him or "audition"?

Just how many auditions do you go on? If you're out there weekly, then you should look for a NIGHT job. If you go out once a month, why mention it? You can probably trade a shift with someone if it's that infrequent.

Do you EVER get any paying work? How long have you pursued this? Do you have an agent? Will you do small jobs? Do you do theatre or you're only movie star or TV star material? (In other words, do you actually want to ACT or BE a STAR? Huge difference.) Once you know for sure what your priorities are AND what you can afford, that lets you know if being a waiter is the job for you or not. Theoretically it's flexible--but it's not so flexible as you think it is--these guys are trying to run a business and workers who want to work WHEN they want to work and not when they may be needed are not top choice.

IF you're serious about acting, have you considered other jobs to pay the bills? Possibly even being your own boss? You know if you had a skill--carpenter or such--you could probably swing auditioning. BTW, Harrison Ford was a working carpenter and it didn't exactly stop HIM from having an acting career.

What you do NOT want to do is lie to people--don't tell them you'll do anything for the job and be available and then bail. Figure out a way to make it work without ripping people off and you'll have a better life.

I'm 16 years old and i'm looking for a job with flexible hours in LA, Where can i write to them online?

We Answered:

If you are not physically able to call on a prospective employer, your options are few at age 16. Assuming you may have physical limitations, your best bet is to contact any of several organizations who cater to and assist people with mobility limitations. Goodwill Industries comes to mind...

Good Luck!

I'm moving to LA to get into acting & writing. Any advice on work?

We Answered:

You are going to need a WELL paying job in order to survive.
Fortunately you have a degree so they wont be as hard to find as they are for the high school graduate, if you want to write try to get an editing job for an existing writer, that way you can network and live at the same time.

You want something where you can make your own hours and yet live,

Did you Know About Hillary's Close Ties to Major Indian Outsourcing Firm?

We Answered:

Tell me it ain't so, Joe! Hillary Clinton would never abandon the lower 99% of Americans, we know because it was just posted in another question, she cares for the working class. So you must be mistaken... The Liberal American Times, (LA Times) would never make such a mistake.
