Well, I can't say I know anything about this new Irish J visa program. however, even if you are eligible for it, you would need a new DS-2019 for the new J program and be registered in the SEVIS data base to extend your J status with USCIS. Otherwise, your employer would need to file an employment based petition for you through USCIS and get that approved, before you could change status to H1b or some other employment based visa status. If you fall out of status on your current J visa before you can apply for the new program, you'll have to leave and get a new visa to return.

Hi Garth, I'm not sure of the technicalities of being allowed to work - the other two replies have given sites to help you there. As to the practicalities of gaining work once you have the permit thing sorted, there is an economic downturn at the moment so you may find it difficult to secure fulltime employment. Having said that, the IT industry is still going strong, although again, you may find it hard to get a fulltime position. If you register with a specialist HR/temping agency, you should be able to access temporary contracts without too much difficulty. Technical writers are always in demand, and if you do a good job you may be able to get fulltime work through your new contacts.

The sites below frequently advertise for technical writers - if you do manage to secure a permit and fulltime job, you can expect to earn about the same as your wife.
