Writing Jobs Chicago

Hazel Said:

Any Poetry Jobs for Teens in Chicago?

We Answered:

Quite frankly I don't know of any "poetry jobs" for anyone, teen or adult. Its not exactly a 40-hour a week salaried occupation. Unless maybe you work for Hallmark writing verses for greeting cards? I have no idea how someone goes about getting that job, or if they would hire a teen who lives in Chicago.

AFAIK, most poets are free-lancers who maybe put together a bunch of poems together into a book and try to find a publisher.

Ethel Said:

do you know where i can get a writing gig in chicago? paid or unpaid?

We Answered:

Get in line. There are about a gazillion people here looking for writing jobs. I used to work for a newspaper a while back and know first hand how tough it is to break in, especially in a big market like Chicago. Your best bet is to seek out smaller newspapers, maybe those in the city or a suburban newspaper. Start compiling those clips and THEN go for the big jobs. Or you can start writing for some of these online newspapers/blogs like Gapers Block.com or the Beachwood Reporter. Online news outlets are becoming big places to submit work or get work noticed. Recently, for instance, the guy that writes for the Beachwood Reporter.com was hired by Channel 5./NBC to write for their new website/blog.

But if you're dead set on print journalism, get used to the idea of starting small. Contact small papers in the 'burbs or in the city. Work your way up.

YOu can also pick up a copy of Editor and Publisher magazine, the biggest publication covering the journalism industry. They also list jobs around the country. You might not be able to break in right away here, but you might find something in another market. They also list jobs online on their website (editorandpublisher.com, I think)

Luis Said:

Are there any jingle writing jobs in Chicago?

We Answered:

Try looking into advertising agencies. A lot of companies don't actual have jingle as their label, but the agencies make jingles.

Pamela Said:

Where can a 14 year old get a job in chicago?

We Answered:

yep, need to be 16 to work unless you're in a family-run business. you'll have to invent your own job for a couple years, like going garage-sale-ing and reselling it on Ebay or something like that.

Robin Said:

Why is it so hard to find a job in Chicago?

We Answered:

If you are willing to do sales, there are a million jobs in Chicago open for you. But if you are like a mjority of people and hate sales, then it's gonna be alot harder.

I have no statistics to back this next comment up, but only experience. A majority of decent jobs in chicago are given through hook-ups. The old saying goes, "It's more about who you know than what you know."

If you have any buddies or family that work in the city, no matter what their job, try to get them to help you apply at their work.
