Darren Said:

how to make money writing short stories?

We Answered:

Meg M. That is some excellent advice. Just to add, the Australian version of the Writer's Markplace is titled "The Australian Writers Marketplace" and can be found in most of the larger Dymocks stores, and is available at most public libraries.

Another idea is to consider joining the writer's centre in your state. The Writer's Centre often has the most up to date information available, and can often advise of any competitions or periodicals that accept short stories.

Finally, until you build up solid a portfolio of published work, you may find that you will have to compromise occasionally and submit to magazines or journals that either pay nothing or very little for your work. For example, Meanjin is a well respected literary magazine and publication will be of great benefit when building a portfolio. However, payment for your work (AU$50) is small compared to some other publications. See:

http://meanjin.com.au/about-meanjin/cont…

Auslit also occasionally print anthologies of short stories by Australian writers that anyone is welcome to submit to. Payment is 4% of gross revenue. See:

http://auslit.net/2010/11/27/australian-…

Alternatively, some women's magazines such as That's Life will pay well for short stories that will appeal to their readers. They are happy to email submission guidelines to potential authors. See:

Best of luck with the short story writing. Hope it all works out for you.

Aere there any legitamate ways to make money writing from home without having to pay for it?

We Answered:

get a copy of the Writer's Market (like a one time charge of about $25 at your local bookstore for the 2008 edition)- there are also a few services out there that, as long as you blog about the topics they give you to choose from, they can sell advertising space on the same site your blog is posted on and you receive royalties of a sort... check out www.triond.com and www.helium.com

Becky Said:

Fellow writers: Is anybody making any money writing "content?"?

We Answered:

You can make money, but you have to know where to go. It also may take some time to build up a "name" so to speak so that you get rehires and direct orders. I can give you a few sites to try, and tell you who to stay away from based on my experience. Send me a message if you are interested.
