Tammy Said:

What careers can I have if I like writing/reading?

We Answered:

I am majoring in Mass Comm with an emphasis in public relations. PR is very similar to journalism. However, there is more demand, higher pay, and more steady hours. When many people hear PR, they think of publicity for celebrities, but that is only one facet. Many PR people work for businesses or government. They typically write and (sometimes) give speeches, handle press releases, deal with internal communications (things like newsletters), and much more.

Advertising is also a mass comm job that would require less public speaking. You have to be able to use your communication skills to come up with short, catchy selling phrases, but you also must be interested at least somewhat in graphics and visual communication.

Visual journalism or photojournalism involves creating stories out of pictures.

And editing can be a very exciting job (although sometimes difficult to get into). If you can get a job at a book publisher in editorial, you read potential manuscripts, and when you find good ones you work to get them published. You would work with authors to adjust their work to meet your audiences wants/needs. It isn't all editing grammer and proofreading, although some of that is involved.

Lastly, you can always write for a magazine instead of a newspaper or become a freelance writer.
