Writing Career Opportunities

Tim Said:

How can I find writing and editing career opportunities for elite general interest magazine companies?

We Answered:

most magazines websites will have job opportunity boards

Marlene Said:

What sort of career opportunities are available for a 15-year old?

We Answered:

I agree with Mel. You don't need a career, simply a job.

Look to a job that will allow you to use your strengths, or incorporate your hobbies.

You're still a bit to young for a job in the public sector, but you could check into volunteering at the Library to read to children.

You might be a huge help to children who are having difficulties in elementary school, too. Not sure about age limitations, but perhaps you could find a job tutoring elementary students who need an assist.

What sort of career opportunities exist in Jacksonville, FL for someone with a law...?

We Answered:

I was in an MI reserve company out of Jacksonville back in the day. They shut down a long time ago. It was an SF unit (though I wasn't SF qualified).

If you have any Spanish language skills, there's often some translation work available. You can either consult/contract with a federal agency or sometimes with local law enforcement. I did both up in D.C. and there's some of that available here in south Florida, too. I can't be positive about Jacksonville, but the best place to look is actually with contractors out there in D.C. They're usually the point for field operations of that kind and they're always looking for cleared people. For local law enforcement, you'd probably have to find a local contractor. Or start your own business and contract people out. You'd have to scan government listings for RFPs in that area. You don't need language skills if you're the boss and just doing the admin part of the work.

You could also start your own security business, too. I don't know that Jacksonville needs more security guards or security consultants, but it's something to consider. Some kind of threat-assessment company or something. Entrepreneurship is a better way to go if you can do it, I think.

Good luck!!

Are there more opportunities for a career with a Broadcasting degree or an English degree?

We Answered:

This is coming from an English major (writing track) that would have majored in journalism if his school offered the concentration:

Of the majors you are considering, none--none--will make a difference in your vocational life, so you'd best choose the one you like best.

For me to tell you that English is more practical than broadcast (which I believe is true) is like saying a Ding Dong is less calories than a Twinkie. Eat the one you like best. I will tell you that people well think less of your degree if it says broadcast on it, but think long and hard if that matters to you. It really shouldn't becuase your degree is only good for getting you your first crappy job (which you will leave in 2 years like everyone else).

If you don't major in one of the natural sciences it doesn't matter what you major in (humanities or social sciences).

Discuss It!
