I have Windows 7 starter. I am a semi-beginner programmer and know HTML, Autohotkey, played with Python, played with CSS and other things. I use Autohotkey for just about everything. When I am finished with an Autohotkey script, I convert it to .exe and make sure it runs on Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7. If I were you I would use Autohotkey as it can do just about anything, anywhere, and anytime. It is a very easy language but it is VERY VERY powerful.

For magazines you need to study a year's worth of issues. What is the magazine's style? Who are their readers? Are most of their articles written by staff members of freelancers? What kind of advertising do they accept?

A very good reference book is "The Writer's Market," which lists every magazine, how often it publishes, what percentage of articles are freelance written, when and how they pay.

Once you know all that, then you have to learn to write what is called a "query letter," which shows a potential editor that you are familiar with their magazine and you can write in their style.

No matter who Writers Market says, call the magazine and ask who the current editor is for the department you intend to contact.

Make sure it is letter perfect - no typos. It takes about 6-8 weeks to get a reply.

If you start sending out lots of query letters - keep a list of what you sent, when you sent it and what the editor's response it.

As for newspapers, many of the smaller newspapers are often looking for someone to cover local town meetings, so you could check for writing opportunities in that venue.

The novel I just started working on a few days ago gives me that same hiccup you described. For a while, I had resigned myself to not doing fantasy, and to write more about poverty and sadness and real life things. Now I am back to my science-fiction and fantasy sort of writing, and I am so much happier. Although the main character is proving difficult to write because I am nothing like her, I am greatly enjoying myself.

Pay is good, working hours are fine and the co-workers are really professional in almost every way. However, the requirements (once accepted) are kind of difficult to achieve (i.e. starters are required to write a total of 60 pages every 2 weeks). Difficult but possible.

For Freelancers, no requirements are imposed. You work at your own pace; at your own discretion.

Larry Niven, who has written some smashing stuff, in the course of "Inferno" a great update on Dante's epic, went for the jugular in criticising Kurt Vonnegut's style of writing.
It leaves a bad taste. No matter the rights or wrongs of the criticism ( and he was way wrong ) it seems so mean, so demeaning. It shouldn't matter that you disapprove of someone else performance; leave that judgement to critics and the buying public. Make your own stuff shine and don't try to dim your contemporaries.
