Wanted Freelance Writer

Gabriel Said:

How do I start a career as a freelance writer?

We Answered:

There is always a demand for "service" articles for regional magazines. For instance, "Top 10 golf courses" (B&B's, restaurants, day care centers, weekend getaway destinations, hiking trails, biking trails, gyms, places to take th ekids, . . .) in the (Chicago, Denver, Seattle, Fresno . . .) area.

Besides the fact they are duller than dirt, so the competition isn't as stiff as it is for, say, opinion pieces or short stories or poetry, you can take a lot of your investigative expenses (meals and hotel bills in particular) off your taxes, IF you document them well and can prove to the IRS that you are selling articles.

Luis Said:

What does it take to be a freelance writer? Do you have to have a degree?

We Answered:

Anyone can a get a job doing anything if they put their mind to it..if you have a degree it is easier..but you still have to know people too...so your articles can be published into magazines and newspapers and such...

Go to college and Major in Journalism..you will get a internship your 2ND or 3rd year ..try the school newspaper too..it might be part of the curriculum

Jaime Said:

Who can I write for if I write Christian poetry as a freelance writer, for money?

We Answered:

There is (or used to be) an annual publication called Christian Writers' Market Guide. I suggest that you google it.

Beth Said:

If you wanted to hire someone to be a constant writer for your website, how much would you expect to pay them?

We Answered:

How much value are they going to bring you? If they drive in traffic that gets ad revenues of $20,000 a month, you can shell out for high quality. Maybe pay them a salary.

I'd say, pay them 1/4 of the value they drive to your site, tracking that off of the hits they produce (how many page views their average article gets). Considering your taxes, internet-related overhead, and drawing a paycheck for yourself, that seems fair.

If this is just something fun, I don't see the point in paying them.

Hope that helps.
