Video Game Writing Jobs

Esther Said:

Jobs in the video game industry?

We Answered:

You could be the script writer, or the programmer who has to know about mathematical physics

Lonnie Said:

What video game industry jobs are there that don't require a computer science degree?

We Answered:

As another poster said, you can certainly do art, if you have talents in that area. But to be involved in the industry, you don't have to have a job that's directly related to the games. Think about it - these companies are *companies*. Not only do they hire game designers, but they also need everyone else that goes into a functioning company: Human Resources, accounting, marketing, finance, law (esp. intellectual property), etc. You could actually major in anything you want, and do an internship for a games company, and when you graduate, work in that industry. So that's another option for you.

Go to the website for your favourite game design company. Click on their "about us" or "careers" link, and read through the various positions they're looking for. Those may give you some ideas.

What can I do, as a 14 year old, to prepare myself for a job in video game/anime writing and creating?

We Answered:

First off, Hockey god and Mr. Queer are *******. I cringed when i read both those answers, anime is awesome and I hate HaTe HATE when people say that a job is just a hobby or not a real job at all. A person can be whatever the heck they want to be! (I wanna be an author, and I've had plenty of people try to tell me that it isn't a real job 'hello! if it isn't a job then why are there so many books/video games/animes/mangas, huh? jeez -ok rants over, on to the question!-

I would suggest that you take some classes in writing, art, or computer animation and such. If you haven't had that opportunity yet it should come junior/senior year or maybe in college, if not, you can always take night classes. Practice is key, and you have to be ready for opposition and struggle. just be determined and it helps if you love what you do.

Don't think your art/writing is bad, never throw out something you've drawn or writen, it can be used to help improve yourself. start with the easy stuff, and as time moves on you'll get better. see if you can find another person with similar ideals that you can trade work and offer constructive criticism with. that would be a big help too.

more likely than not, you'll have to get a second job at first, so at least be ready for that(you may not have to, who knows but its best to be prepared)

if you search on the internet there are a lot of programs to start with that are free or for a minor fee. like i said, you really need to practice, and don't ever let anyone tell you that you can't do it. Good luck, I know where you've been- trust me.

here is a site that you can post writing on for reviews:
http://fanfiction.net (for fanfictions only)
http://www.fictionpress.com/ (for anything else)

and your can go here to post art( assuming that you have a scanner, that is)
http://www.deviantart.com

hope this helps!

How much do video game writers get paid?

We Answered:

If you are in the US and it isn't listed on this website: http://www.bls.gov/oco/ then there is no information.

The problem is that people who write for video games get paid incredibly varied wages. There is no industry standard or union. So you could probably pull in a few hundred for one game and thousands for another. Just look at the variety of quality on a system like Xbox. You've got Call of Duty quality and then you have the Lego games...or Kung Fu Panda. Obviously people got payed a whole lot more for CoD.

Discuss It!
