Chris Said:

I'm 21. WHY can't I get a JOB ?

We Answered:

i like the 'old' resume b/c it had what you actually did at each job so that employers can see your skills. but its a little cluttered and could be condensed. also education should be at the top before work experience. you can also put in other skills like computer programs(word, excel, etc) and hobbies

good luck and always remember to follow up with the employer so that they dont forget about you

Toni Said:

What job should i do?

We Answered:

Without language skills he will probably get a job without public contact. He will need to understand enoughto be able to follow directions, etc. May I suggest a literacy couse in his spare time?

Would my cat be ok with new owners and would it be really horrible of me to give him away to move abroad?

We Answered:

If he's in good health and you can afford to, then I'd suggest you take Ben with you. Canada doesn't require pets arriving from the UK to be placed into quarantine. The link below has details of the entry regulations.

As you are planning to stay in Canada for one year, this is sufficient time for you to obtain a passport for Ben. This means that when you return to the UK, he can travel under the Pets Travel Scheme and won't be made to enter quarantine upon arrival. The DEFRA web site has information outlining exactly what the requirements of the Pet Travel Scheme are.

When I moved from the UK to Cyprus, I took my 17 year old cat with me. I couldn't bear to be parted from her and my vet agreed that moving countries would be less stressful for her, than being rehomed after such a long time together would. I was amazed at how quickly she settled into our new home and adapated to a hotter climate. If anything, I think the move gave her a new lease of life because there were so many new sights and smells for her to discover.

You obviously love Ben very much and would miss him terribly. If you are not able to take him with you, could a local cat rescue help you find a foster home to care for him whilst you are away?

This is such a difficult decision to make, that I wish you well whatever you decide.

Stephen Said:

Does a resume' with a job history (currently working) be disqualify from a job interview elsewhere?

We Answered:

Some interviewers use this trick (asking for confidential information about your current employer) to test the interviewee's ethics. If you are willing to spill proprietary info about your current employer, why wouldn't you do the same thing to them? Which is why doing this usually disqualifies you from getting the position. Employers want to know they can depend on you to be loyal, discreet, and ethical. Giving away "insider info" is not a way to make them believe you are trustworthy. Not only that, but your current employer could take legal action against you, as well as firing you, for sharing that info.

There's nothing wrong with telling an interviewer, "The information you're requesting is proprietary, and it would be a breach of my ethics and the law to share it with you."

What are your views on Vancouver Winter Olympics 2010?

We Answered:

Are you aware the Olympics ended on Sunday after the hockey game?

Canada finished with the most gold medals ever by any country at the winter Olympics. Americans of course got the most medals because they got so many bronze (no offense hehe but they're good at being okay).

Everyone's favourite game in Canada was probably the men's gold medal hockey game. The only sports I really watched were men's and women's hockey but I watched all the countries' games, not just the Canadian ones.

I almost cried when Alexandre Bilodeau brought his handicapped brother on tv with him, and he had tears in his eyes from pride. Of course, we can never forget how the Olympics started with the death of the Georgian luger.

Casey Said:

Is it easy for a new immigrant in Canada to get a good job based on his experience?

We Answered:

It is not going to be easy.

It is EXTREMELY hard to expect that whatever position you have in your country will be the same position and level you can get when you migrate. Many become disillusioned because they expect that moving from one country will just allow them the same lateral movement -- and they see that it does not happen

I'm not saying it's not possible, but the NORM is that you normally start from a lower position -- unless you were educated in the US or Canada that they know the quality of your education. It is common to find college graduates or professionals starting out in the bottom rung, or worse, in service oriented businesses such as restaurant servers or taxi cab drivers.

My suggestion is to be open to whatever position is available. Try to look for the same position/industry as you have in your own country, but be open if the available position for you is of a lower level.

Otherwise, be prepared to come to Canada with loads of your own money if you want to be picky with the position -- because you might be waiting for several months to get the job you want. That means you need to have money of your own
