I am writing a speech for a taped job application. Any helpful public speaking tips?We Answered:
It depends on the subject of the speech. Is it informative, persuasive or entertaining? Some general public speaking tips are the following:
Create an outline. If you write your speech word for word, you will tend to memorize it that way and it will sound too rehearsed.
Practice your speech after it is written. You can practice in front of the mirror or have a friend watch you and give you honest feedback.
Don't stay glued to your notes. You need audience contact in order to grab the attention of the listeners and let them know you care about what you are saying. Anyone can read off a paper, but good public speakers actually SPEAK to their audience.
Check the volume of your voice. Too soft and you will appear shy and nervous, too loud will irritate the listeners.
Have a look at your content, make sure you introduce your topic clearly, hit all the main points and use a conclusion to tie it all together. Use examples that your audience will connect with and will already have some information about. Don't stray off topic with long anecdotes or personal stories, just find small illustrations that the audience will remember. Add a little humor, but don't try to be funny or they won't take you seriously. Also, don't use slang or euphemisms. Keep it clean and professional.
Also have a look at your outfit. Is it professional enough for the job you want? Make sure your hair and clothes say good things about you and don't distract the listeners. You want them focused on your words and the informative quality of your speech, not on your hot pink hair, or immodest top.
Also, relax and try to speak as if you were helping out a friend.
Hope that helps..

Would Ted Sorenson (JFK's speechwriter) be able to get a job writing speeches today? We Answered:
No, his speeches were too eloquent and and persuasive. He'd need to be much angrier and conceited.
