Most reputable newspapers and magazines would not copy your work - they would be too concerned with the legal ramifications. It's all dependent upon your experience. If you've been freelancing for some time, charge appropriately for your time. Most ad writers have two basic ways they get paid: Flat Rate, and Hourly. If you've established yourself in the industry, you can command fees of $75 an hour (or more), and up to $300 per ad written.

If you've never written for a real estate company before, try offering your services to a local Realtor with your fee "waived" (read: for free, but don't tell them that!) for the first two or three ads. This will give you some samples to show future prospects, and will help you to establish yourself as an expert in your local area. Be sure that you decide what you will charge before you offer to waive your fee. That way, once you've completed your "waived" projects, your client knows exactly how much they need to pay you for future listings.

One more thing...Always be sure to get a writers agreement BEFORE you begin any work with ANY client. For a project where you "waive" your fee, create an invoice with your regular price total, then cross through it and write "WAIVED" across the invoice. This will show prospective clients that you are a consummate professional, and will make them appreciate your services that much more. Plus, you'll be much more likely to gain repeat business.
