I've been told that copy writers get paid as little as $100-$200 for a sales letter up to $15000 for a sales letter plus royalties based on the sales generated from said sales letter.

I'd definitely try to get a base pay plus a percentage of sales.

If the content you write is going to be a product, then I think you can charge way more. You're creating a product that they can sell forever, with no cost to them. Even after you quit. They need to pay you upfront...perhaps you could get a percentage of the sales of that too.

Dan Kennedy (one of the best copywriters in the country) says that the biggest qualification of getting $15K for a sales letter plus royalties has nothing to do with copywriting ability at all. The biggest qualification is keeping a straight face when you ask for it. Keep that in mind, because it may sound ridiculous to ask $500 for two pages of copy...but you have to look at the value it's giving the customer.

Think of it this way. If I had a piece of paper with a treasure map on it, that showed where a chest of gold was located, how much would that be worth? What would you pay for it?

Would you say, "Oh, that only cost 10 cents to copy...I'll give you a quarter for it?"

Well, no...of course not. The paper...the map on the paper rather has value. Just remember that what you write has value and is worth way more than the time (because you have the expertise and can get it done quickly) or the quantity of what you write.

You have experience! Have you ever completed a task? Done a good deed? That's your experience! You could say that you were in charge of the fundraising for your class, handled money for sales in club, etc. You could have a teacher or neighbor write a reference letter for you to attach to a brief outline type resume. They could say that you were responsible for babysitting for the past 2-3 years, you collected canned goods to help your class finish first in the contest, you volunteered to keep the neighborhood addresses painted and visible from the street, assisted with yardwork for some elderly neighbors or whatever! References are important, and employers will check them, so consider using honest, reliable people. And Good Luck!!
