You need to know how to write for virtually everything.
If you're a student you have to write thesis papers, if you're a doctor, have to write prescriptions, if you're a researcher, have to write formal reports, etc.
Authors get paid REALLY well. Look at J.K.Rowling

Writing is kind of like singing...either you make it or you don't.

Talent doesn't necessarily matter either, a lot of has to do with luck.

If you are willing to get a degree in Journalism, but don't expect to make a lot of money, unless you hit it big time.
