I am an editor and I wouldn't consider for a moment editing my own stuff. Editors not only bring a new, fresh set of eyes to the page, but they also come with a finely honed skill set that the average person (and many writers) does not possess.

In order to save time and money, make sure you take a break from your manuscript. Return to it in a week or so and go over it with a fine tooth comb. Use spell-check and grammar-check. If you don't understand why something is flagged, look it up. Try to read like an editor instead of the writer.

Before you engage the services of an editor, make sure your pages are the best you can make them. And even with an editor, you are not likely to be able to go directly to the publisher. That, however, is another matter for another time.

But it can generally be said that so called online editors should be avoided, its far more convenient to use offline applications.

Aviary.com is like a free online photoshop. There's bound to be plenty of options to make your photos. And if that doesn't work, there's free DOWNLOADABLE programs that could work, such as GIMP or Paint.net

Through my experience editors online are a lot cheaper because they dont have to pay for office space or tavel fees. Ask around a few places and get a few qoutes before you take any offers. Tell them exactly what you want edited and how long it is. Then they will be able to give you a good estimate.
