Associatedcontent.com is legit and works quite well for college students, moonlighters, and SAHMs because you can write as little or as much as you want and on your own schedule. There's no upfront fees, pays between $2-10 per article (on average) plus a % of pageviews. Articles have a minimum word count requirement of 400 which is very easy to do.

Helium.com is another resource, they also pay a little bit of money up front plus page views, but their biggest asset is that they list on-line freelance gigs that can pay between $20 - $75 (and up) per article if selected.

About.com is the last resource I can think of. There's no upfront costs involved; you do have to apply to become a contributing writer and attend a 3 week on-line orientation. My understanding is that the starting pay is about $750 a month.
