Yes, you definitely have to be very careful about how much you expose on the internet. If you're just seeking various questions for research, I think yahoo is your best medium because you don't necessarily have to explain why you want to know something; just ask!
In terms of getting the opinions of other writers, writerscafe.org allows you to set up your own page and is sort of like livejournal. You can get feedback from other writers and hear from editors as well. The only warning I would attach to that is that any website that allows you to publish your work for other people to say may also be able to retain the rights to that work (meaning you could legally have trouble getting it published elsewhere).
