I don't see why you would have to write a letter if you applied in person. Some instances where you might want to write a letter include accepting a job that you have to relocate for, a job that doesn't start within 1-3 weeks, or when the employer requests it.

Did you receive a formal offer letter? If you have, your new employer will have you sign the offer letter before you start.
