Journalism Jobs Online

Kathy Said:

Is it possible to make a living doing online journalism?

We Answered:

I work part time writing for various online publications. The answer to your question is...it depends on your experience and also your willingness to branch out.

I could not get by if was too picky, so the bulk of what I write are things like product descriptions and SEO articles. These are monotonous but pay quite well.

I suspect what you are talking about though, is writing for the online versions of newspapers...in that case you will be taken on by the publication as an employee...you will go into an office and be designated stories.

If you want to go freelance then you just have to start writing and offering the pieces to the right publications.

Do you have a degree or any writing credits? Without one of these it will be VERYdifficult to break in.

Any Teen Jobs, Online!?

We Answered:

Make babysitting flyers using the computer and put them in the library, people's mailboxes, and grocery stores.

Drum up more business and keep a notebook to schedule when you do get a customer.

Culver's minimum hiring age is 14 with a workers permit.

I called many stores because I am 14 looking for a job. This was the response they gave which makes me happy after looking for so long.

Find a local one go online and apply and go in store to apply or call and ask if they are hiring.

What I did was Google a bunch of business near my home and found their numbers using Google maps or their sites and I called and directly asked if they are hiring and what age do they hire at.

Try local grocery stores, pizza parlors, retail stores, fast food restaurants.

Check out my blog. it has tons of money making ideas, saving tips, ways to score freebies , and discounts. the link is under my profile.
You can create a blog too. You can generate money just ranting about your interests.

Eduardo Said:

What other jobs can an online journalist do besides working for newspapers, web and broadcast stations?

We Answered:

Several prospects come to mind. A friend of mine parlayed her MS into being a Media Specialist for a school corporation. They 'used' to be Librarians, back in the day, and I think that there was a waiver involved in her getting the job under the condition that she went to school during the summer to get the courses to get her certification. Another suggestion? www.higheredjobs.com...the working source for higher level academic employment around the country. An MS would qualify you to teach at the community or college/university level...yes, even journalism courses.

There are certain programs that will 'get' you back into the classroom to teach. However, they are limited in scope. The 'hot' trend now is math or special ed teachers. English...or, I should say 'language arts' teachers are not in hot demand right now; UNLESS you have a certification in PE or something that is IN demand.

Try substitute teaching to see IF you would like to be in a classroom setting. Then, you have to determine which group works for you; elementary, middle, or high school students. EACH one has its particular joys and pitfalls.

The NICE thing about being employed by a school corporation? Summers and Winters off plus other assorted breaks. Downside? You have to grade papers and take care of the 'pearheads' who don't want to learn. But, these are the options. Yes, you will have to take a hit in pay...but it is better than being 'blown out' of your current job because you aren't happy with it.

Plus, keep in mind. We are in a recession. Many state legislatures will be meeting in the early part of 2009 and the forecast for education is NOT pretty and there will LIKELY be budget cuts. First come, first served. Save your money and determine to 'go for it' after a year's time. Ciao

As a media practitioner, does the rise of online journalism affect your job?

We Answered:

Yes, it sure does, makes life harder as it is simply a new and less expensive form of media that attracts readers and diminishes advertising, thus lowering salaries.
