Craigslist has a site for writer/editor want ads, if you're in a big city.

Query newspapers directly and ask to work. Sports depts. have freelance budgets; other depts. might or might not. Tell them you want to be a stringer (that's newspaper jargon for freelance).

Why be freelance, though? Do that to earn samples, but look for full-time work.

Also, the guy who told you to work for free is an idiot. Work cheap, but not free. Newspapers will pay you something, even if it is only $20 an article.

Helium's not bad. Post articles about what you want, get 1c/hit. And there's various articles you can enter for magazines, which pay a lot more if you get selected.

You won't find a photojournalist job posted on Career Builder, Monster.com, or any of those generalized job listings. JournalismJobs.com does have jobs posted on a regular basis. You could try the National Press Photographers Association (NPPA), JournalismNext.com, Journalism.org...check out the link below. But you'll probably need at least one (most likely unpaid) internship under your belt before you're hireable. You're going to need a clip book of published images to bring with you along with a journalistic resume to interviews. Keep in mind that a lot of qualified people are going after a few choice jobs, so the competition (especially for us newbies) is fierce. Networking helps A LOT. Persistence is essential. Good luck.

Well you need to know how to use the Journalism type of programs like in-design i believe and in style or something. But it would be best to have a portfolio of your work like a blog site or if you wrote for your school paper and had something printed save that copy and build up a nice folder etc.

I too am a freelance Journalist, writing about entertainment and music and I have quite the portfolio for all of my work, I've had my work in print and online and have been running my blog site since 07.
