Jobs For Writers

Misty Said:

What are some of the most emotionally healthy jobs for editors/writers?

We Answered:

Try TECHNICAL WRITING, especially since you have a background in science! It is a much better atmosphere than the tooth snarling world of journalism! I am a professional editor and writer, and have a lot of experience in all facets of the industry. Journalism can be a nasty field sometimes.

You might also enjoy writing articles for science journals or magazines. The key to good writing is to KNOW your subject well and it seems that you are already interested in science. You can usually find "a call for scientific papers" on the internet. Here's a recent example:

Tim Said:

what is the best site to find jobs for writers?

We Answered:

Not a site, but get a copy of the Writer's Market (any edition within the past 3-5 years will retain relevance). It'll be under $5 used.

See if your local newspaper will take you in part-time, and then you can continue to exercise your writing abilities.

Joann Said:

Are there any jobs for writers in the RAF?

We Answered:

I'm not familiar with what the RAF might do, but the U.S. military publishes an armed services newspaper called "Stars and Stripes." I believe that there is something like an Office of Public Affairs that handles press releases and such. SOMEBODY writes training manuals, the scripts for visual training aids, and recruiting brochures. Plus there are position papers, internal policy papers, and I know that many military historians are themselves serving in the military. Obviously a number of these things would fall under technical writing more than journalism. Your best bet would be to speak to an RAF recruiter in person and ask about opportunities for writers and journalists.
