How To Write A Bid For A Job

Dan Said:

How do I write a bid for a lawn mowing position?

We Answered:

If they haven't laid it out formally how they want the bid presented, then you do a proposal (bid) as you would any other project. You need to spell out exactly what is included & not included in your proposal, being very clear & concise. Do not forget to include payment terms if the church has not defined that.

You may always want to list any local references who can confirm to the church that you will follow through and can be depended upon.

Good luck.

i need to know how to write a proposel for a snow playing job . ?

We Answered:

I;m going to guess that you were trying to spell......

Snow Plowing job.

Here is how I would price that job.

What is my hourly rate ?

How many hours will it take , EACH time I do that job ?

How many times in a month will I have to do that job ?

How many times in one winter season, will i do that job ?

Multiply the number of hours, to do that job EACH time you do it, by the number of times that you expect it to snow this winter.

Can you see how much of a uncertainty this has ? No one knows how many times it will snow. each winter.

So DON"T charge by the season, charge by the month, wether it snows or not. Set a monthly rate that equals doing the job 4 times. If it only snows twice in that month you are ahead .

Or charge by the month, with the understanding that more than 4 times in a month means more money, and set an amount for the extra service.

As to a written proposal........

Name the customer, their address, the lengthof service ( November to April for instance ) the cost per month, or per job, and the method of payment, and when you want to be paid. Make sure that you don't get sucked into doing things that you don't want to do, like cleariing snow off the roof of a house.

Now are you doing this by hand or with a truck ? If with a snow plow truck, make sure that you mark the edges of the driveways, or you may wind up buying them new sod in the spring. Do you have commercial liability insurance ? If not, why not ?

What is your back up plan, if you get sick or hurt, and you cannot do the work that day ? That comes under the heading of "What if " ? All ways ask your self...... What happens if........ ? That helps to reduce the panic factor, when something goes wrong, and trust me , some thing all ways goes wrong.

Timothy Said:

contractors & salespeople: do you want to know ahead of time that a customer is getting multiple bids?

We Answered:

I would not do business with him. He has already shown you he is hard to get along with. A good contractor will give you a written estimate, and expects to have competition. His reputation and experience should give him the knowledge to give you a complete, fair price. If you can't get a detailed estimate, including a list of materials expected, how can you say "go ahead"? Your mulch may end up grass clippings instead of wood chips, grass could be seed instead of sod, and you wouldn't have any say, you signed up...get a new contractor.
