Go to the newspaper and ask if you can intern there. It'll be nothing big, mostly getting coffee, but you'll show the people that you're responsible and passionate. From there, you can talk to people to see who you need to talk to about, possibly, becoming a freelance writer.

You have to start at the bottom to get to the top in the journalism world. It's a competitive field.
