Freelance writing is sort of a tough field these days (honestly, it always has been), since many full-time magazine and newspaper writers have lost their jobs and are picking up the majority of the freelance opportunities. But I'd recommend picking up the 2010 edition of "The Writer's Market", which is full of contact names for periodicals that use freelance writers. The book is organized in such a way that you can concentrate on areas of interest. When I was starting my writing career more than 20 years ago, that book saved my life. Here's a link:

There's quite a few surprisingly enough...alot of titles you probably have never heard of too. Best advice pick a copy of the Canadian Writers Guide to Market articles to Canada magazines. Check online with Chapters/Indigo. That guide book comes out every year and it will set you in the "write" direction. Good luck!

I used to work for a website that relied on user generated content to boost traffic from search engines. We used to hire freelancers from gumtree and would pay between £20-£40/article, depending on the writer's credentials. Occasionally, we would get articles from experts in their respective fields (eg top solicitors, doctors, therapists etc) and we had to pay a lot more.
