There are always graphic designer jobs available to great artists. Many jobs, especially in marketing and entertainment, need graphic designers. However, with the current economy, many companies are cutting costs anywhere possible. If you cannot afford to offer professional quality work for extremely competitive prices, then it may be difficult to find a job. Although, jobs in nearly every field, not just graphic designers, have become more scarce. So if it is what you will enjoy doing, I do not see any reason to stray from it.

Since you are a student you should go to your schools career center and ask them for help in finding an internship or job. They should help you (that's what you are paying the big money for).
