Freelance Writing Service

Sam Said:

What is a good pay rate for freelance writing services?

We Answered:

I used to write for a marketing company that charged $100 an hour for writing press releases. Since you're freelance and don't have a large overhead, you might want to charge a bit less. You can bill for any extras, too, such as long distance phone calls.

Tax questions for a freelance writer living in a non-US country?

We Answered:

If you are not a U.S. citizen or resident and work from a foreign country and do not get payment in bank account in the U.S., then your income is not taxable in the U.S.
Only hosting service does not make your income taxable in the U.S. However, if you your own servers in the U.S., then it may be taxable.

What is the best way to get into freelance writing?

I'm doing the same. Let me know when you find out. I have some of my stories of short fiction on my website.

Where to advertise freelance writing services?

We Answered:

First search listings on places like Monster.ca (or .com, or whatever job search site is in your location), and you may find some Looking Fors there.

Second, I would create a website for yourself which lists your resume, why people should hire you, and some examples of your work.

It's much easier to advertise your website than it is to try and place ad listings.

Some hints:
- Pick your area of expertise. That narrows down where you're placing ads, and also helps with how you want to word your services.
- Don't be afraid to solicit customers. If you see a business that could use your services, send them a letter letting them know what you can do for them.
- Don't sell yourself short. Just because you're new doesn't mean you should charge rock bottom prices.

Google Freelance Writer Jobs and see what you find. Model your ads after other people searching. The link I have below has some further information.

Freelance Writing and State Sales Tax?

We Answered:

Sales tax is generally charged for the sale of goods, not services. So assuming all your doing is writing an article or something similar then you don't need to collect sales tax. If you were to start shipping out something like books then you could be subject to sales tax. You're best bet is to contact a local accountant who is very familiar with the rules where you live.
