Freelance Writer Rates

Judy Said:

Does anyone know how much a freelance writer could command per entertainment blog? What is a good rate? ?

We Answered:

I had to go and review my rate sheet to give my input.

This will depend on your experience as a writer and what the client is willing to offer. Another factor is whether you have to do a little or a lot of independent research. How many times a week are you looking at?

If it is once a week, consider $75 for a once week blog. If anything more, add $25 per post. This also largely depends on your experience and how much you are able to command. If you do not have a lot of experience professionally, commanding more than $50 a blog will be a challenge.

Also consider an hourly rate. Determine how many hours it will take you to write one blog at say 500 words. Factor in time to write, edit, and polish. Average for that word count is usually around 2-3 hours, at least for me. If I am going by hourly I charge a rate of $20 per hour, though with some clients it's $15 per hour. Depends on the project, timeframe, research, client budget, etc.

On the low end you're looking at a paltry $10 (yes, people will try to get you to write for an incredibly cheap wage which is an insult to writers). On the higher end you could be looking at around $100 or more per post.

I would start high and come down to be quite honest.

EDIT:

Paul, just noticed your site and experience as a writer. Bravo on the Web site! I love how creative it is.

Seeing how you DO have a fair amount of experience as a writer I retracted the $75. Go with $100 and see what your client says. You may have to haggle on this but if it gets you a decent wage, go for it.

Best of luck!

Rates of pay for a freelance writer?

We Answered:

It's difficult to get started at first. My advice is to register on such sites as Elance.com, pick your work carefully and then offer your services for free. This will be painful, but it's essential to earn some positive feedback and gain a good reputation, especially if you want repeat work.

Ask yourself, "At the moment, why should a client choose me over everybody else?"

The answer? "Because I'm free or very cheap!"

Then be open and punctual with your clients and some will be more than happy to give you a chance.

The first answer is a good one, 1-2 cents is a standard rate, but again you might consider going even less to get yourself started.

However, never undervalue your services as a writer. Always be accommodating of course, but if a client messes you around unreasonably - and some will - end your association politely and cut your losses.

After you've successfully completed a few assignments, you can hold your head high and bid more competitively.

Be easy to work with, produce good copy, and you won't steer far wrong.

The very best luck to you in your freelance career.

What do I charge as a freelance writer?

If you calculate an average from previous jobs you were paid for, you should be able to get a reasonable amount to charge. Generally, freelance work is paid per word.

How much should a freelance writer in Kansas City charge a client to write copy for a website? ?

We Answered:

Aloha
I wrote this report about setting fees. I haven't updated it in a while, but the basics still apply. Check it out at

Of course, the fees for someone in Kansas City vary from those of someone in New York City or Los Angeles. It also depends on your experience and how long you've been a freelance copywriter.
The best kinds of clients to work with are the ones who understand the value of hiring a freelance copywriter and you can develop a good working relationship with.
Watch out for those who "nickel & dime" you - saying if you charge them a lower fee the first time they promise they'll give you a lot more work. Follow your gut. If something doesn't feel right, there's a reason.
