Kimberly Said:

Moving to/Living in London?

We Answered:

Unfortunately Amanda it's not easy. You have two visa options.

Tier 1 Highly Skilled Worker
You must have a minimum of a Masters degree and have been earning the UK equivalent of 20,000GBP over a 12 month period that falls within in the 15 months prior to the application.
or
Tier 2 Sponsored Skilled Worker
Your job must be on the shortage occupation list, otherwise your sponsor must meet the resident labour test i.e. they must satisfy the Home office that there are no suitably qualified applicants in the UK or EU before offering it elsewhere. In the current economic climate, this is obviously proving to be more and more difficult as unemployment swells the available labour pool and occupations on the shortage occupations list are reviewed and removed frequently.

Both visas are issued for a maximum of three years after which you will have to reapply to extend your stay in the UK.

You will be eligible for settlement after a continuous period of five years. Your dependants will be eligible at the same time provided they have lived with you in the UK for a minimum of two years before applying for settlement.

The only other option for you would to get employment in the US with a newspaper, news agency or broadcasting organisation that could lead to you being posted to the UK as their representative on a long term assignment. A visa can be issued for two years after which you would need to apply to extend your stay. The same settlement conditions apply (five years).
